Mr. Smitherman gave no time to GOD concerning the most important decision of his whole life. African children need every assistance they can get to fight poverty, remain healthy, stay in school; especially when there is no money at home to cover basic needs.
 
Ugandan girls, for example, merely need $30 a month for school tuition, yet when parents die because of AIDS this becomes a major challenge. Many drop out of school to marry early, find a job, or fall prey to a "better life" thru prostitution.
 
Poverty weakens the resolve of many: "It's easy to say, 'Abstain,' " said Benjamin Wamusiru, an English teacher who leads the abstinence club at a local school. "But actually doing it is difficult with all the pressures in society. We lose members because of pregnancy. As time goes by, more and more of the club members experiment. It's toughest on the girls." Other try harder, "We learn to not even listen to the guys' promises," Patricia said. "You don't express interest. You say no and then you walk away. Of course, some characters will continue to bother you. But you have to try to resist."

Nick James writes in USA Today Sept 2 2003 that "children are different," and explains "their essential attitudes and readiness to learn" have changed.
 
Further, Nick notes that "teacher friends of mine from Michigan to California to Alaska (where I taught) have similar stories."
 
It is not the schools job to potty-train or teach respect, that is the parents job, as Nick writes it's "time for parents time for parents to take back the responsibility of raising and educating their own children."
